to serve with joy

Updated: Feb 16

“While I focus on manipulating the camera angles and toggling between the two cameras, I also get to enjoy and worship God at the same time.”

Meet Joseph Wong, who joined our Tech Ministry in 2022. Having grown up in a Christian family, Joseph attended church with his family from a young age. A Sunday School teacher led him to Christ during his primary school days.

One of the verses that is especially close to Joseph’s heart has been Jeremiah 29:11. The context of this verse is that the Israelites were going through a period of hardship and suffering. They had been told that God would be coming to rescue them after two years, but Jeremiah the prophet revealed that this was a lie from a false prophet. Instead, Jeremiah told them, God would come for them after 70 years had passed. This would certainly have been a very tough pill for his listeners to swallow…

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future

and a hope. - Jeremiah 29:11

Over the years, Joseph has found great comfort and encouragement through this verse.

“Whenever I face hardships and they don’t seem to be going away quickly, this verse reminds me that God is still in control of everything. God has everything planned out, and I should trust in Him and His plans for me, for his plans are always for our benefit, and not something to cause harm to us,” Joseph shares.

Joseph and his wife, Evelyn, are fairly new to our church, yet their heart is to use whatever gifts they have to serve the body of Christ. The couple are both nurses with the upcoming Woodlands Health located at Woodlands South MRT. While Joseph has started serving in the Tech Ministry, Evelyn is a helper in the Children’s Ministry.

Joseph shares, “Service has been a big part of my Christian life throughout my growing up years. A few months after my wife and I joined WEFC, there was a call for more to serve in various ministries such as the Tech Ministry. As we prayed about it, we sensed God leading us to step forward to serve the church, even though we are still relatively new to this community.”

Although their jobs as nurses require them to work shifts, Joseph and Evelyn want to bless others in whatever ways they can during the weekends they can come to church.

Joseph elaborates, “The learning curve isn’t as steep as I expected, so it has been quite an enjoyable time for me actually! Besides learning how to adjust the camera angles and settings, I get to observe others doing the presentation slides as well as mixing the audio. It’s great to see everyone working together as a team. While I focus on manipulating the camera angles and toggling between the two cameras, I also get to enjoy and worship God at the same time.

My main worry is when I accidentally adjust the camera angles while it is being cast on the screen. When that happens, everyone will see the camera moving from one fixed point to another, which should be avoided as much as possible. Apart from that, this is quite a simple role!”

For Joseph and his wife, it is clear that they consider serving God’s community as a great joy and privilege.

“Serving has made me happier, knowing that I am serving God’s family. And through service, I get to know others as well!”
